Optimized DSP and Microcontroller Implementations



For real-time implementations of multimedia codecs and components on embedded processor cores and DSPs, Core Design Kits (CDKs) are available. They are optimized for devices with low resources in terms of memory and computational power, e.g. mobile players or smartphones. The CDKs are written in C or C++ and exist in two different versions. One can be directly compiled for 16-bit or 32-bit processors; the other one is a template code for DSPs with fractional or integer arithmetic of any word length.

In basic terms, Core Design Kit software is suitable for any 16- or 32-bit processor platform. Code can be licensed in source code form or as object code libraries for various compiler tool chains:

  • All ARM based processors
  • All MIPS based processors
  • Analog Devices Blackfin
  • Texas Instruments , TMS320C64x, TMS320C67x
  • PowerPC processors
  • Starcore, Texas Instruments TMS320C5x and Freescale (Motorola) Coldfire (only source code)

For a number of DSPs, Fraunhofer IIS offers audio codecs specifically optimized at assembler level for the target platform. Implementations for the following platforms are available:

  • Freescale (Motorola) 563xx*
  • Texas Instruments TMS320C67xx

Fraunhofer IIS audio encoder and decoder for
the Apple iPhone SDK




Fraunhofer IIS supplies optimized audio encoder and decoder libraries for use with the Apple iPhone Software Development Kit (SDK) and other mobile platforms. This versatile family of technologies enables radio stations, service providers and media player developers to introduce or improve mobile services incorporating industry-leading audio quality for smart phones.

High quality audio codecs by Fraunhofer IIS allow for a new generation of mobile services such as iPhone Internet radio by:

  • Boosting the audio quality of mobile multimedia applications
  • Minimizing bandwidth requirements (HE-AAC v2 offers up to 50 percent better compression efficiency compared to other codecs enabling good stereo service quality at 32 kbit/s)
  • Enhancing service stability
  • Enabling a more satisfying user experience and lowering the costs per stream
  • Software encoders and decoders will help stimulate the audio accessories market

For surround sound over common stereo headphones, Fraunhofer IIS offers real-time MPEG Surround binaural decoders.

The iPhone decoders from Fraunhofer IIS are part of the CDK (Core Design Kit) software concept.
