Cinema was a short time ago the land of 35mm-film. But more and more systems and movies becoming digital. The decision to invest in new digital cinema technology to make filmmaking "fit" for the digital age depends on
the quality of all components and systems,
the solving of security needs during the production and the transfer and
a complete digital workflow from the acquisition at the film set to the exhibition in the movie theaters.
The Fraunhofer IIS offers developments for a complete digital film production and provides internationally approved know-how in standardization. As leader of the Group Digital Cinema within the ISO-standardization for JPEG2000 for Digital Cinema as well as partner of Hollywood´s Digital Cinema Initiatives DCI, of the German Federal Filmboard FFA and as member of FKTG, EDCF we are working at the forefront of new technologies for the future of cinema.
Development for Digital Cinema in the fields of:
- Camera Technology
- Field recorder: megacine
- Tools for post production
- Data Compression JPEG2000
- Digital Archiving
ARRI-D20: Digital Filmstyle Camera
We are development partner for ARRI Cinetechnik, München for the digital filmstyle camera D20. The ARRI-D20 combines all features of analogue film camera handling with a digital camera electronic. A 6 MPixel CMOS Sensor with a size of 2880 x 2160 pixels offers a depth of field like the 35mm film.

Megacine: Portable Field Recorder
The storage and handling of the huge amount of data produced during film and HD shooting is a great challenge for development. Especially when no or only less quality loss is required. A development of Fraunhofer IIS MEGACINE addresses these requirements in a handy and robust size - the ideal digital solution for data storage and data transfer to post production. It includes a display, metadata storage, automatic detection of format and framerate, single and dual HDSDI IN, 2 Gigabit Fiberchannel and JPEG2000 encoding.

Tools for Post Production
Software tools and Plug-Ins for well-known post-production software can make it easy to authorize, generate and validate Digital Cinema Packages (DCPs), the digital successor of film reels.
