On the Right Track with Fraunhofer IIS‘s WLAN Positioning Technology

On the occasion of the presentation of the „365 Orte im Land der Ideen“ („365 Landmarks in the Land of Ideas“) award to a partner involved in one of its test-beds for WLAN positioning technology, the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS presented a number of successful projects based on its innovative positioning solution during a Technology Day in Nuremberg on October 29, 2009.

Over the course of the Technology Day, companies such as IT2Media, Messe Frankfurt and INIT as well as the Department of Computer Science 8 at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg demonstrated how the WLAN positioning technology developed by Fraunhofer IIS can be used to provide new services, from the NaviScout trade show guide to MobileWALK, an aid to wayfinding in cities.

For instance, partner company IT2Media presented its Mobile Walk application, which was launched recently. Anybody interested who has a mobile device with Wi-Fi capability can download the required free software to it from www.mobilewalk.de. The application enables a user to get their bearings around the cities of Nuremberg, Fürth and Erlangen and to have selected information displayed, such as a discotheque, automatic teller machine or hotel. In addition, a functionality called Car Finder makes it easy for them to locate their car after a long day of shopping.

About the WLAN Positoning Test-Beds
For the purpose of further developing and evaluating practical applications, Fraunhofer IIS operates WLAN positioning test-beds in Nuremberg and other German cities. Providing an efficient platform for positioning based on wireless local area networks in indoor and urban outdoor environments, the test-beds enable rapid development of location-based services. The WLAN positioning test-beds are supported by renowned manufacturers, leading service providers and users from a variety of industries. Partners include airport operator Flughafen Nürnberg, art2guide, Map and Route, the city of Nuremberg, public transportation provider VAG and charity organization Caritas Mecklenburg. Background information on all projects and the technology used can be found at www.awiloc.de.

The partners are working together on a standard for positioning and location-based services in public spaces. All participating companies have the opportunity to become involved at an early stage, helping to develop trial and optimize applications. Fraunhofer IIS not only contributes the underlying WLAN positioning technology, but also organizes the test-bed work and coordinates collaboration among partners in a consortium. This makes the test-beds a platform for companies to quickly convert innovative ideas into products.
