Audi and Fraunhofer IIS present at IFA in Berlin the first in-car installation of ”NewsService Journaline®“

Audi presents together with Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS the first realization of NewsService Journaline in a car environment in hall 5.3 at IFA, Berlin.

This information service allows passengers to easily navigate through thematically organized textual news. Constantly updated information is received via Digital Radio DAB and immediately made available. Passenger can mark individual items as favourites for direct future access. The provided information will span a wide range of topics: current news, regionally sorted traffic messages, or programme associated information like the station’s contact address or programme schemes are just some examples. The service is fully integrated into the Audi MMI (Multi Media Interface) user concept, and presented in the production-run MMI display.

In future, the user interaction while driving will be handled by speech output and voice command recognition. This accommodates the important requirements of driving safety. After a test phase, Audi will decide on the introduction of this service into series production.

Audi’s participation is based on its knowledge drawn from the MACS research project, which led to the creation of a personalized information service. Stefan Sellschopp, Audi project director CarIT, emphasizes that personalization will enable the user to quickly access all relevant information even while driving. In addition, the user will be able to define the presented level of detail.

Alexander Zink, project director for NewsService Journaline at Fraunhofer IIS, is very pleased with this innovative form of implementing the service: ”Already today NewsService Journaline is very popular among broadcast stations. The cooperation of Audi and Fraunhofer IIS to commonly create an extended user experience based on NewsService Journaline will provide mobile users with a convenient way of accessing all kinds of information – just like teletext does on your TV screen today.“

NewsService Journaline®:
The text based information service allows the user to easily navigate through text messages, which are hierarchically organized in menus. NewsService Journaline is highly optimized for an efficient transmission in the digital radio systems DAB as well as Drm (Digital Radio Mondiale). International broadcast stations have been providing this service to their listeners for years. It can be accessed with almost any of today’s PC based Drm receivers. MACS:
The MACS research project, funded by the German ministry for education and research (BMBF), was carried out as a cooperation of Audi, TU München, the Institut für Automobilwirtschaft Nürtlingen/Geislingen and TU Darmstadt. Its aim was the integration, development and realization of novel mobile services.
