  WorldDMB honors Fraunhofer IIS scientist

Major recognition for computer scientist Markus Prosch. The 37-year-old received the Per Erik Selemark Award of the World-DMB Forum in October. The international panel honored his outstanding contributions as chairman of the DAB+ Task Force.

Markus Prosch develops applications for new digital radio systems at the audio department of Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS in Erlangen. Chaired by Markus Prosch, the DAB+ Task Force extended the DAB standard by the additional audio coding.

The new DAB+ standard was published in February 2007. It offers a much more efficient audio compression technology, which allows tripling the number of radio stations to be broadcast. It lowers broadcasters’ costs per channel and delivers a wider variety of stations to consumers. This is made possible by the MPEG-4 High-Efficiency Advanced Audio Coding v2, the latest audio codec included into the standard. The integration of MPEG Surround allows for 5.1 channel broadcasting.

The international WorldDMB Forum promotes the adoption and implementation of Eureka 147 based products and services. Named after the late Vice President Per Erik Selemark (Swedish Radio), the prize is awarded every year to a World- DMB member. It honors extraordinary achievements in the worldwide marketing of the DAB standard. The award was presented to Markus Prosch in Oslo.

The Fraunhofer researcher who is also the author of the DAB+ brochure was delighted about the appreciation of his work because: “It is the members of WorldDMB panel who choose the laureate. We hope to have contributed to the breakthrough of digital radio with DAB+.”
