MPEG Surround brings universal surround sound to
any digital broadcasting system in an easy and cost
efficient way. It allows high quality surround sound
at low bit rates and avoids simulcasting of stereo
and surround programs while being compatible with
mono and stereo receivers. Fraunhofer IIS presents the
world’s first MPEG Surround decoder implementations
on fixed-point processors from Analog Devices and

The “Technologies for Media Production” project, supported
by the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Infrastructure,
Transport and Technology is developing a distributed system
for film and broadcast work which will offer seamless
exchange of data between film and television production.
This will allow productions to prepare content in an
integrated production-, postproduction-, and archiving
environment for a variety of output formats, such as Digital

World’s first fulltime, commercial HD Radio Station

CBS radio station WZLX in Boston launched its new 5.1
Surround service this week on the station’s main HD
channel, based on MPEG Surround technology provided

ERLANGEN, Germany – Cisco has selected the MPEG-4
AAC-Low Delay codec from the Fraunhofer Institute
for Integrated Circuits IIS to transmit audio in the Cisco
TelePresence meeting solution, which transcends traditional
video to provide a “face-to-face” meeting experience
through a simple interface. The Fraunhofer codec
provides a realistic sound image through several channels
of full-bandwidth, music-quality audio, with the

Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS announced
that Harmonic Inc. (NASDAQ: HLIT) is using
Fraunhofer’s floating-point MPEG-4 High Efficiency
Advanced Audio Coding (HE-AAC) and MPEG-1 Layer-2
audio coding software for the DiviCom® Electra™ family
of broadcast encoders. The high performance Electra
7000 HD and Electra 5400 SD H.264 encoders will be
shown at the Harmonic booth (#SU9620) and the Electra
7000 will also be featured at the Fraunhofer booth
