NewsService Journaline®: The Information Service for Digital Radio live at CeBIT
The new information service available for the digital
radio systems DRM (Digital Rado Mondiale) and DAB
(Digital Audio Broadcasting) will be presented at the
BMBF booth.
NewsService Journaline® DRM transmissions providing upto- date news will be broadcast by Deutsche Welle during CeBIT from the transmitter sites Sines in Portugal, as well as Juelich and Wertachtal in Germany.
NewsService Journaline® provides the digital radio user with a great additional value next to the pure audio program – it allows the intuitive and selective access to thematically sorted text information like the latest news, information on the broadcaster and the program, or traffic news.
Themes important to the user can easily be stored as favourites and later on played back by the touch of a button. This functionality is especially handy when it comes to traffic status information for a particular highway or the local weather forecast.
“We are highly impressed by the posivite response to News- Service Journaline® from the listeners, broadcasters as well as receiver manufacturers. This service enhances the digital radio with a very attractive and easy-to-access source of information – a kind of teletext for the radio,“ says Alexander Zink, project manager for NewsService Journaline® atFraunhofer IIS. All aspects of this novel data service are consequently optimized for the requirements of digital broadcast systems. The transmission equipment including NewsService Journaline® encoder technology, like the Fraunhofer DRM ContentServer or the Fraunhofer Multimedia DataServer for DAB, are already in operation by a large number of international broadcasters.
“Deutsche Welle, broadcaster and strongest supporter of DRM worldwide, has a high interest in testing all possibilities provided by the DRM system in cooperation with reknown partners like Fraunhofer IIS,“ says Peter Senger, Director of Distribution at Deutsche Welle and chairman of the DRM Steering Board. “The circulation of content from the Internet via DRM is of great importance to Deutsche Welle, as it provides the listener with the latest free-of-charge information.“
NewsService Journaline® was developed within the Radio- Mondo consortium, funded by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF), with the project partners Atmel, Bosch, Fraunhofer IIS, Micronas, Sony and T-Systems.
