WorldSpace

The WorldSpace system was the first digital audio broadcasting system which transmitted directly from satellite to handheld portable receivers.  It is based on MP3 .

It consists of three geostationary satellites and covers Africa, Asia as well as South and Central America. The first two satellites, AfriStar and AsiaStar, were successfully launched in October 1998 and March 2000. The third one, AmeriStar, is scheduled for future launch. Once completed, this system will have a potential audience of 5.2 billion people.

Within the WorldSpace project a transmission scheme optimized for satellite based systems was developed in close cooperation with the satellite manufacturer Alcatel.

Fraunhofer IIS contributions:

  • System definition
  • Waveform and transmission protocol design
  • Development of professional monitoring receivers, uplink stations and test equipment
  • Field trial campaigns carried out for system validation and Quality of Service QoS assessment
