Overview
Digital Video Broadcasting Handheld (DVB-H) is a technology designed to enable the broadcasting of multimedia content to mobile devices. It is based on the terrestrial digital television standard DVB-T and intended to satisfy the requirements of mobile receivers such as low power consumption and high error robustness. DVB-H can be employed to broadcast television or radio programs as well as to provide interactive services.
Support of HE-AAC v2 and H.264/AVC up to 25 fps at QVGA resolution
Support of RTP/RTCP streaming
Tested in DVB-H trial operated by Fraunhofer IIS and University Erlangen-Nuremberg
Successful DVB-H broadcast with Fraunhofer IIS serving as system integrator commenced at the German University in Cairo (GUC) in November 2007. At present, a total of four video channels are transmitted on the campus.
Optional surround sound extensions with MPEG Surround
Applications
The Fraunhofer IIS DVB-H player can serve as accompanying player software for DVB-H receiver cards but also as easy-to-use receiver software for transmission tests.
The DVB-H live encoder from Fraunhofer IIS is typically located in the studio, in a playout center or at the transmitter site.
Availability
The Fraunhofer IIS DVB-H player codecs are available on a wide range of platforms, including ARM, MIPS, PowerPC, ADI Blackfin, TI-C64x, Coldfire, Starcore and other processors.
The player modules and SDKs are available on various operating systems including Windows XP, Windows Mobile and embedded Linux.
The DVB-H live-encoder from Fraunhofer IIS is available for PC platforms running Linux.
Most Fraunhofer IIS DVB-H software modules can also be used in other applications such as 3GPP, DMB, MediaFLO® or ISMA compliant streaming systems.
