Requirements for long-term preservation of cinematographic material
In today´s world more and more cinema content is produced, post-produced and stored using digital technologies. Therefore, archives receive and have to preserve digital film material for long-term periods. Fraunhofer IIS has been working on the development of standardized data formats and system architecture for digital long-term preservation of cinematographic material and access to archived material. Based on the requirements for digital film archiving JPEG 2000 was chosen for image encoding and the Material Exchange Format MXF to wrap the images with audio, metadata and other information into one package due to its scalability and image quality.
During the last years the department of Moving Picture Technologies worked together with European film archives in research projects, to offer first solutions for these requirements.
