Professional Video Data Compression

Image Compression for applications close to cameras and in postproduction

The Quality, provided by MPEG-2 und MPEG-4 profiles for Internet Streaming, is not adequate for professional Video- and Movie production. For digital production of professional movies (TV and Motion Picture Industry) and digital postproduction the best compression rate is not the most desired criteria. More important aspects are very high image quality, frame-synchronous editing, and fast coding/decoding cycles. Intra-frame coding is the first choice for these applications.

The department Moving Picture Technologies at the Fraunhofer IIS develops new algorithms, methods and systems for video data compression for applications in cameras, close to cameras and in postproduction. The most important criteria is the preservation of image quality, so typical compression ratios are 20:1 up to lossless compression (typically 2:1). Developments will be done based on JPEG2000 , H.264-Intra, as well as proprietary solutions with minimal consumption of FPGA resources or parallelization options for maximum data throughput.

Typical application fields are professional cameras, postproduction, realtime control tasks or video surveillance.
