Development of Digital Cinema

A short time ago Cinema was the land of 35mm-film, but more and more systems and movies becoming digital. The decision to invest in new digital cinema technology to make filmmaking "fit" for the digital age depends on:

  • the quality of all components and systems
  • the solving of security needs during production and transfer
  • a complete digital workflow from the acquisition at the film set to the exhibition in the movie theatres

Standardization and research among Digital Cinema

The Fraunhofer IIS offers developments for a complete digital film production and provides internationally approved know-how in standardization. As leader of the Group Digital Cinema within the ISO-standardization for JPEG2000 for Digital Cinema as well as a partner of Hollywood’s Digital Cinema Initiatives DCI and of the German Federal Filmboard FFA and as a member of FKTG, EDCF we are working at the forefront of new technologies for the future of cinema.

According to our customers orders, we develop systems and components for digital Cinema. We provide licencing of technologies and devices in the following sectors:

  • Programs for digital postproduction, based on software
  • Compression of data with JPEG 2000
  • Software solution for digital archive systems

D-Cinema Consulting and Partnership

We are scientific and technical consultants for Digital Cinema and E-Cinema and working close together with the German Association of Cinema Owners, the German Federal Film Board and the DCP Germany GmbH.

On a more international point of view we are working together with SMPTE, IDCF, CST, British Film Council, Nordic Projects and most of the European Film Archives. We are partner of DCI (Digital Cinema Initiatives) and of the ASC American Society of Cinematographers.

By order of the six Major Studios DCI, Hollywood, the group of Digital Cinema of the Fraunhofer IIS created a test plan for Digital Cinema. To realise and accompany the digital roll-out in Germany we work on behalf of the Filmförderanstalt (FFA) and cooperate with the French Commission Supérieure Technique de l’Image et du Son CST.

Fraunhofer IIS is associate and technology supplier of the distributional platform for digital Cinema DCP-Germany.
