Software and hardware for cognitive systems
Intelligent automated image analysis is a key R&D theme in the area of cognitive systems. Our development work centers on methods for object detection and analysis, automatic multi-view calibration and 3D reconstruction, with results directly incorporated into high-performance compact cameras.
Object detection and analysis
Human vision means we take only a fraction of a second to find and classify objects appearing in an image, particularly faces. Within the area of cognitive systems, a great deal of our research and development effort is focused on methods for automatic detection and analysis of objects. Our SHORE™ software solution makes it possible to detect faces in still or moving images fast and reliably and to classify them with respect to gender, age and facial expression.
Camera calibration and 3D algorithms
Owing to optical and other influences, real-life camera systems inevitably differ from theoretical models based on idealized assumptions. A consequence of this discrepancy is that camera systems need to be calibrated. In particular, multi-camera systems such as are used to produce 3D content for film and television can work properly only if the cameras' relative positions have been precisely determined. The development of methods for automatic calibration based on image analysis is another of our themes within the area of cognitive systems. In addition, work is carried out on automatic 3D reconstruction of objects viewed from various angles.
