Since October 2005 the Fraunhofer Institut for Integrated Circuits IIS and the Chair of Information Technology LIKE of the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg are operating an own DVB-H transmitter for testing purposes.
The first broadcast data consist of text information that describes the transmission technology, as well as a radio channel featuring the campus radio
bit eXpress.
DVB-H is a new transmission system for multimedia reception on mobile receivers. It is based on the transmission technology of the Digital Video Broadcasting Terrestrial (DVB-T) and is taylored to the special needs and characteristics of portable terminals.
Compared to DVB-T, DVB-H offers increased battery stamina for the terminal and is more robust to transmission errors on portable devices. Hence DVB-H can transmit audio and video services saving cost and power. Besides TV channels, DVB-H can also broadcast radio channels and interactive services.
The transmitter has a power of 50 Watt and is placed on Fraunhofer IIS's own 50 m high radio tower on the institute campus in Erlangen-Tennenlohe. Featuring an omnidirectional antenna, the sender can be received in large parts of Erlangen and the surrounding area. It will be used for research and training purposes.
