At a glance
Systems for wireless data communication are becoming increasingly widespread in industrial and home automation. They typically take the form of narrow-band telemetry systems and are used to transmit sensor data and control information across simple networks. Fraunhofer IIS's RF and Communications Departments have worked closely to develop this technology for narrow-band, long-range wireless data transfer.
Technical description
The 868 MHz band permits particularly efficient channel coding and so enables operating ranges up to ten times those of standard wireless systems. The transmitters used, which are based on inexpensive commercial radio chips from manufacturers like Chipcon or Silabs, are small and ensure long battery life. The receivers are equipped with digital signal processors and, thanks to their flexible design, can be adapted to customer requirements. They are suitable for both stationary and mobile use and can be optimized for either.
Application
Uses range from transmitting switch status information, for instance for lighting control, to machine-to-machine (M2M) communication to wireless remote meter reading and consumption control in smart metering applications. Further possible applications include monitoring of large-scale installations or facilities, collection of data from environment sensors in hard-to-reach places, and transmission of vital signs data acquired from athletes or emergency responders.
Offer
Thanks to our many years of experience in RF circuit and antenna design, we have in-depth expertise in wireless communications. We will be happy to provide you with advice on applications of standardized wireless systems such as Zigbee or Wireless M-Bus. Use our client-specific solution to put your ideas into practice, particularly if you have specific requirements that standard technologies are not designed to meet, for example a long operating range, robust transmission or energy-efficient implementation.
