Wireless Sensor Networks

Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits

Applications

Wireless sensor networks are used mainly where prolonged autonomous operation and low bitrates are essential. Moreover, since the networks self-organize, sensors can be deployed in large numbers and in poorly accessible places. This makes it possible to implement an extremely wide variety of applications.

Application areas include:

  • Logistics (e.g. tracking & tracing, transport monitoring, anti-theft measures)
  • Facility management (e.g. burglar and fire alarm systems)
  • Physical asset management (e.g. tracking of medical devices)
  • Measurement of the motion of, and loads on, physical structures such as buildings or vehicle bodies
  • Environmental analysis (e.g. weather forecasting and earthquake prediction)
  • Agriculture (e.g. weather observation and animal monitoring)
  • Patient monitoring (e.g. bed sensors)
  • Intelligent clothing (e.g. for vital signs monitoring)
  • Intelligent homes (e.g. air conditioning and energy consumption metering)

In the course of various research and industry projects, Fraunhofer IIS has implemented a large number of applications, mainly for use in logistics, medicine and automation.
