Radio Positioning – Event Detection

At a glance

The primary goal of event detection is not the calculation of position data as such, but rather the control, monitoring and insight based on this reliable position data. Hence focus lies on the instant detection of relevant events and the subsequent analysis of the information for the user. This is made possible by intelligent algorithmics, which filters events from the position data, initiating prompt reaction with the appropriate measures.

 

Technical description

The RedFIR® system developed at Fraunhofer IIS is a position sensing technology which e. g. allows for the real-time calculation and analysis of data on soccer training sessions, making effective use of the event detection technology. With RedFIR the user creates and defines “events” according to his requirements. The “event observer” then delivers the automatic detection of specific events that are relevant to the application. The event observer is able to detect numerous basic events such as possession of the ball, passes, crosses, shots on goal along with physical data such as step count, distance covered, and speed profile. A fraction of a second later the information is made available via user interface. According to the user’s requirements and applications any number of additional events can be defined. The event data is automatically stored in a database and used for detailed statistical analyses.

 

Application

The event detection technology complements the position data collected by positioning systems with an intelligent component. The range of possible applications is wide: improvement in active safety in road traffic, computer-aided situation analysis in sports, monitoring of task forces in dangerous situations, or the automatic inspection of security restricted areas at airports. Integrated event detection technology in combination with environment models and position data is a tremendous asset to the end user and can even be enhanced for event prediction applications.

This includes the integration of event detection systems into existing positioning platforms as well as the development of entirely new solutions. The event detection technology has already proved a great success in the Fraunhofer projects RedFIR®, Ko-TAG and LocON, guaranteeing the systematic evaluation and interpretation of positioning data.
