Technology Preview: MPEG Spatial Audio Object Coding (SAOC)

With the new MPEG standard SAOC, music lovers will be able to enjoy a highly individual music-listening experience that enables them to adapt the position and volume of instruments and vocals according to their personal preferences. SAOC will also have tremendous potential for teleconferencing sessions: Disturbing level differences between call-participants are a thing of the past. And there is even the option to position communication partners in a virtual 3D-sound conference room.

Binaural rendering technologies

With binaural technologies, 5.1 surround content is rendered for playback over conventional stereo headphones. Sound directions can be distinguished and different sound rooms can be modelled. Fraunhofer IIS demonstrates this technology in combination with MPEG Surround. This format delivers a high-quality surround sound experience at stereo bit-rates whilst remaining fully backwards compatible to stereo devices. At AES, visitors will be able to listen to MPEG Surround binaural on our new demo player.

Surround Sound for digital radio, IPTV and Internet

Fraunhofer IIS shows the surround sound format MPEG Surround and the stereo-to-multi-channel upmix solution SX Pro. MPEG Surround is the ISO standard delivering iPod-compatible, high-quality surround sound experience at stereo bit-rates whilst remaining fully compatible to stereo devices. MPEG Surround can be distributed by online music sources, deployed in digital broadcasting services, and used with a variety of applications for portable music players and mobile phones.

SX Pro is the stereo-to-multi-channel upmix solution that enables a seamless transition from stereo to surround content distribution. With SX Pro broadcasters are able to adjust the upmix characteristics according to the station’s musical image.
