Audio technologies for high quality communication
With the Audio Communication Engine from Fraunhofer IIS it is possible to have a conversational experience that is as natural as having everyone present in the same room however far away one might be. One component is the MPEG Enhanced Low Delay AAC (AAC-ELD) codec for high quality audio. Already implemented worldwide, AAC-ELD supports mono, stereo and multi-channel transmission. Other key features include an efficient multi-channel echo control that allows for hands-free communication without disturbing echoes. Listen to the Fraunhofer technologies at AES and enjoy communication with high-quality sound.
Binaural rendering technologies
With binaural technologies, 5.1 content is rendered for playback over conventional stereo headphones. Sound directions can be distinguished and different sound rooms can be modelled. Fraunhofer IIS demonstrates this technology in combination with mp3 Surround and MPEG Surround. Both new formats are delivering a high-quality surround sound experience at stereo bit-rates whilst remaining fully backwards compatible to stereo devices.
At AES, visitors will be able to listen to both formats on stereo headphones.
Technology Preview: MPEG Unified Speech and Audio Codec
The Unified Speech and Audio Codec is the first audio codec worldwide that supports high-quality compression of both speech and audio signals at very low bit-rates. For audio signals at very low bit-rates, the codec offers better quality than High Efficiency AAC v2, the most efficient audio codec worldwide. At the same time, the speech quality achieved is superior to state-of-the-art speech codecs. Applications that will benefit from the new codec are, for example, mobile TV and multimedia download applications via wireless networks. Be sure to check out the superior quality of Fraunhofer codecs at AES.
Technology Preview: MPEG Spatial Audio Object Coding
With the upcoming MPEG standard SAOC, music lovers will be able to enjoy a highly individual music-listening experience that enables them to adapt the position and volume of instruments and vocals according to their personal preferences. SAOC will also have tremendous potential for teleconferencing sessions, with the option to position communication partners in a virtual 3D-sound conference room.
