The introduction of surround sound for Digital Radio DAB was focused in a workshop in the headquarters of Bayerische Rundfunk, on December 11th. Hospitals are under increasing pressure to reduce costs. This means that they will need to use their resources even more efficiently in the future. Fraunhofer IIS has now developed a wireless system for locating medical equipment and blood products as well as for condition monitoring. The project, which is called ”OPAL-Health“, makes managing medical equipment easier and improves the safety of transfusion procedures.

Increased Retail Security with Smart Items

It is not uncommon for a few boxes of valuable goods
to disappear from palettes on the way to retail outlets.
That is why Fraunhofer IIS is working on a new technical
platform to safeguard such items. This involves
using wireless ad-hoc sensor networks to create logistical
information systems that allow them to be tracked
along the entire distribution chain. Fraunhofer IIS is
showing its VitOL project, a technological platform for
the realization of logistical information systems based
on sensor networks at French European Union Presidency
Conference in Nice, France.

Fraunhofer IIS and VoiceAge provide reference for upcoming MPEG audio codec

GERMANY/CANADA: Leading providers of audio codecs Fraunhofer IIS and speech codecs VoiceAge Corporation have announced that their proposal for a new MPEG audio codec has been selected to provide the basis for ongoing standardization work. The new technology is the first-ever audio codec to support high-quality compression of both speech and audio at very low bit rates.

Digital Broadcasting Information Service “Journaline” Demonstrated for the First Time in Multiplatform Implementation at Olympic Games 2008

To support the increased need for information at the 2008 Summer Olympics in China, the new text-based Digital Radio information service “Journaline” delivers added value to the listener. Integrated into selected Audi shuttle vehicles used in Beijing, this service provides passengers and drivers with up-to-date information in the form of a “sports and news ticker”.

Erlangen International AudioLabs: Cutting-Edge Research in Germany

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg have opened the Erlangen International AudioLabs. The center will employ an international team of scientists working on audio and multimedia technologies over the next ten years. The Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS will invest 60 million euros earned from licensing of mp3 patents to fund this effort.

The Pulse™ Smartpen from Oakland-based start-up Livescribe™, Inc., is a computer within a pen that captures handwriting while simultaneously recording audio and synchronizing it to the writing. Users can simply tap on their notes to replay what was recorded at the exact moment they were writing, so they never miss a word they hear, write or speak. These advanced audio features are supported by Fraunhofer’s highquality MPEG AAC codec implementation.
Fraunhofer IIS Audio Decoder in Frontier Silicon’s Radio Module powers REVO DAB+ Radio

Frontier Silicon has partnered up with REVO to deliver the world’s first radio that combines DAB/DAB+ and Internet streaming. Revo´s Blik Radiostation, containing Frontier Silicon’s Venice 6 multi-standard module, is the first digital radio on the market using Fraunhofer’s DAB+ audio decoder and framework. The Blik offers native DAB+ support without the need for further upgrades.
Sony Ericsson Media Manager uses HE-AAC from Fraunhofer IIS

The Sony Ericsson Media Manager software comes with the MPEG HE-AAC audio codec from Fraunhofer IIS. The Media Manager software allows users of Sony Ericsson mobile phones to convert CDs to the HE-AAC format and to load songs on their phones. The software comes with every Sony Ericsson Walkman phone.
Comrex offers AAC-ELD for Access Codecs

Comrex Corporation, the leading manufacturer of audio codecs and telephone interface products for broadcast has announced the signing of an agreement with Fraunhofer IIS to license its new AAC-ELD (Enhanced Low Delay) coding algorithm for use with the Comrex ACCESS line of audio codecs. The new algorithm will make its Comrex debut the upcoming National Association of Broadcasters show in Las Vegas.
