Comrex offers AAC-ELD for Access Codecs

Comrex Corporation, the leading manufacturer of audio codecs and telephone interface products for broadcast has announced the signing of an agreement with Fraunhofer IIS to license its new AAC-ELD (Enhanced Low Delay) coding algorithm for use with the Comrex ACCESS line of audio codecs. The new algorithm will make its Comrex debut the upcoming National Association of Broadcasters show in Las Vegas.

Comrex Technical Director Tom Hartnett explains, "AAC-ELD combines the best aspects of low-delay audio coding with Spectral Band Replication to reduce bit rate. This combination creates a coding algorithm that is uniquely suited to real-time audio transmission over IP circuits." Hartnett continues, "Combined with BRIC Technology on ACCESS, using AAC-ELD allows full-fidelity, high-quality audio transmission at a data rate that easily fits into satellite and 3G wireless upload channels. One-way ACCESS transmission delay using AAC-ELD is an easily managed 50 milliseconds."
Kris Bobo, Managing Director of Comrex Corporation adds, "Comrex is pleased to be able to offer this outstanding algorithm as part of our AAC Option package for ACCESS codecs. AAC-ELD is free to current owners of the ACCESS AAC Option. It is currently available for ACCESS Rack and will be available very soon for ACCESS Portable."
Harald Popp, head of the Multimedia Realtime Systems department at Fraunhofer IIS, emphasizes the high audio quality of the ACCESS line: "With the integration of the brand new MPEG standard AAC-ELD, the ACCESS line benefits from the unique advantages this communication audio codec offers featuring highest audio quality at very low data rates. We always enjoy working together with Comrex on such innovative products."
The Comrex ACCESS with the new AAC-ELD codec will be on display at the upcoming NAB in Las Vegas, Comrex booth N2125 in the Radio/Audio Hall. AAC-ELD will also be demonstrated at the Fraunhofer IIS booth SL7424.
