Following the reunion of Germany, the institute established a second location in Dresden called Branch Lab Design Automation EAS in 1992. The renamed Division Design Automation EAS performs R&D activities aimed at computer-aided design (CAD) of electronic and heterogeneous systems.

Fürth
The Technikum Neue Materialien in Fürth is the third Fraunhofer IIS location comprising the X-ray Development Center
, the Project Group Ultra Fine Focus X-ray Technology, and the Center for Intelligent Objects ZIO.
Nuremberg
The Working Group Supply Chain Services SCS, the Departments Power Optimized Systems and Communication Networks, as well as the Project Group Network Access are located at Forschungsfabrik Nuremberg.
Würzburg
Since the establishment in 2010 at the University Würzburg the project group Nano X-ray Systems for Material Characterization cooperates closely with both the new foundation chair for X-ray Microscopy and the Development Center for X-ray Technology EZRT in Fürth, a joint department of both Fraunhofer IZFP, Saarbrücken, and Fraunhofer IIS, Erlangen.
Ilmenau
The project group Wireless Distribution Systems / Digital Broadcast DVT of the Fraunhofer IIS was founded in 2008 and cooperates technically and spatially very closely with the new foundation chair Wireless Distribution Systems / Digital Broadcast of the Ilmenau University of Technology.
Kornberg
At Kornberg in the Fichtel Hills (northeastern Bavaria) Fraunhofer IIS maintains a radio test facility.
