FlexBMS: Flexible Battery Management System with Active Cell Balancing

The new flexible battery management system developed by the Fraunhofer IIS not only actively balances charging differences in order to utilize the overall capacity of the system and reduce battery aging. It also permits individual cells and entire battery modules to be connected in series or in parallel as needed.

Each cell has a minimal amount of electronics that record the cell parameters and actively balance the charging differences between the cells. Optimized bus communication and integrated voltage and temperature sensors minimize cabling between the cells.

BMS-ACB1: Battery Management System with Active Cell Balancing for multi-cell systems

Whenever there are several lithium cells connected in series, asymmetries in the charge status of the cells can occur. This may negatively affect the entire capacity of the system. BMS-ACB1 offers an active cell balancing mechanism, which keeps the charge status of the cells at the same level, optimizing the entire system.

In this process, the energy of the cell, which is charged higher, is saved in an inductor coil. The latter is then used to charge the cells with low charge status. This way, no energy is lost. Moreover, the lifetime of a single battery cell increases.

BMS-PCB1: Battery Management System with Passive Cell Balancing

BMS-PCB1 is a means of passive cell balancing, temperature and voltage measurement for a random number of Li-cells on a board employing a Kalman filter. Via CAN-BUS the battery management system can communicate with a monitoring device and provide critical information such as charge and age status of the battery system. The BMS-PCB1 device can be used solely or as a part of a complex system. The passive cell balancing requires only few components as well as only a small board, saving programming time.
