As mobile devices become more and more widespread, they are enabling people anywhere, anytime to access information about their environment and local services such as shops and restaurants. A great many smartphone apps exist to marry users’ current position with details of their environment. But the GPS solutions currently in general use struggle to function when people enter buildings or narrow streets. Fraunhofer IIS’s localization technologies overcome these obstacles by offering seamless operation indoors and out – thus laying the groundwork for location-based services that work wherever you are. Such services open up new opportunities for business to communicate with customers, while also bearing great promise for the entertainment industry and the development of digital games. Seamless positioning indoors and out is also crucial to future augmented reality applications.
