Road to Digital Production (R2D)

Digitization of the industrial production

On 1st September 2016, Fraunhofer IIS and Fraunhofer SCS together with 3 partners started the development of products and technologies to further promote the realization of a digital-industrial production. The research and development results are supposed to show that an increase in efficiency as well as an optimized quality assurance is possible through digitization. In that sense, they are supposed to help develop new technologies for “Cyber-Physical Production Systems” (CPPS), as well as define fundamental principles and methods regarding the manufacturing and installation of a product with a lot size 1.

In order to digitize the value-chain within the production, an intelligent workpiece carrier with communication and location function within the scope of a so-called Cyber-Physical-system (CPS) is accompanying the product, which is to be manufactured, throughout the whole production process. On the basis of the carried product data and the gained context information, the intelligent workpiece carrier is supposed to autonomously recognize, protocol and operate process steps.
