Data platforms and information exchange

In the video interview, Prof. Andreas Harth talks about the topic of data as well as data platforms and information exchange.

Combining different cyber-physical systems (CPSs) to make one large system is difficult thanks to the patchwork of transmission protocols and data formats. Digitalized applications require information to be represented and exchanged via common data formats. This is why we are working on an open message protocol that allows individual CPSs to communicate with each other and thus provides a quick and easy way of solving compatibility issues. Corporate data that exists in different data formats is made available through semantic modeling of the data and workflows that can be interpreted by machines.

An Industry 4.0 environment generally makes use of centrally controlled digital platforms into which the data is fed. Since there are any number of such platforms, we help companies find the right platform for each IoT use case.
As part of the project, we are also working on a new approach: We are using semantic web and linked data technologies to pave the way toward decentralized management and application logic. Such decentralized approaches provide users with consistent and flexible access to all relevant information while the original data owner retains data sovereignty.

About Professor Andreas Harth

Professor Andreas Harth is chair of Technical Information Systems at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg and head of the Data Spaces and IoT Solutions department of the Fraunhofer IIS Center for Applied Research on Supply Chain Services.
His research is devoted to new solutions for data spaces and the Internet of Things (IoT) that allow data to be processed independently of its original application and system constraints, thereby rendering it portable. His research focus is on developing methods and technologies for decentralized information systems, e.g., in the World Wide Web or blockchain environments, and their implementation in companies. In the course of numerous research projects in collaboration with industry, he has studied data integration, e.g., using Semantic Web and Linked Data technologies, and interaction between components, e.g., by means of process modeling languages. Applications for these methods and technologies range from the Internet of Things and the Web of Things to the field of Industry 4.0.
