Fraunhofer Mobile Surround Sound

Experience 5.1 surround sound on mobile devices and in the living room. Fraunhofer Mobile Surround technologies include multichannel codecs such as HE-AAC Multichannel as well as post-processing technologies for stereo headphones and loudspeakers. Designed to deliver best-in-class audio quality wherever you go, Fraunhofer Mobile Surround Sound is available for all mobile platforms and devices, including Smartphones and Tablets.

HE-AAC – The native surround codec in Android

Fraunhofer IIS presents the only native surround sound codec of Android: Since Android 4.1, High-Efficiency Advanced Audio Coding (HE-AAC) multichannel is natively integrated in the world’s most popular mobile operating system. This enables playback of high-quality 5.1 surround content on Android phones and tablets connected via HDMI to a home theater system. Usage of HE-AAC is absolutely free for service providers and their player apps can make use of the Android built-in HE-AAC capabilities.

MPEG-DASH streaming with HE-AAC audio codec

The HE-AAC audio codec is a proven solution in broadcast and streaming services worldwide. It is available in many commercial solutions and has been deployed in more than 5 billion devices. Thanks to its unique combination of efficiency, high-quality audio and audio-specific metadata support, it is the perfect audio solution for new adaptive streaming standards such as MPEG-DASH that provide a stutter-free experience on congested networks. HE-AAC enables the best possible streaming experience from bit-rates as low as 24 kbit/s for bandwidth-limited stereo operations and up to high-quality surround audio at bitrates of 64 to 320 kbit/s. Experience the codec’s excellent surround sound quality at NAB in our 7.1 surround sound enabled living room. HE-AACv2 is also the mandatory codec in the DASH264 Implementation Guidelines developed by the DASH Industry Forum ( DASH-IF is hosting a networking reception at NAB this year on April 10, 6.00-8.00 PM at the Renaissance Hotel. Extended High Efficiency AAC – The world's most powerful audio codec

Extended HE-AAC is the latest codec upgrade to the AAC family. It provides significantly improved quality at low bit-rates between 8 and 64 kbit/s, while ensuring compatibility with HE-AAC streams. Target applications include music streaming via mobile networks and satellite broadcasting systems. Experience at our NAB booth how well xHE-AAC handles various signal types including speech, music or a mix of both. This flexibility makes it especially valuable for broadcast and streaming services.

Dialogue Enhancement for TV and Radio

Finding the right balance between dialog and ambient sound is a major challenge for sound engineers in TV and radio. The award-winning technology Dialog Enhancement allows the audience to individually change the audio balance according to their preferences. TV and radio broadcasters report that reduced speech intelligibility due to background music and sound effects as well as speech-to-music balance are common sources of complaints from their audiences. This is particularly true for those with hearing impairments or who speak a different language. Dialog Enhancement was recognized as “Pick of the Year” by TVB Europe ( at IBC 2011 and was selected for the NAB 2012 Technology Innovation Award (

Sonnox Fraunhofer Pro-Codec Plug-In

The award-winning Sonnox Fraunhofer Pro-Codec Plug-In enables mix and mastering engineers to audition up to five codecs in real time within a digital audio workstation environment, produce an optimized mix and encode to multiple formats simultaneously. It also comes with time-saving and intuitive tools for the “Mastered for iTunes” program, permitting real-time auditioning, clipping detection and corrections while mixing.  Fraunhofer will demonstrate how the Pro-Codec implements all of Fraunhofer’s major MPEG audio codecs, including MPEG Surround and HE-AAC multi-channel, for superior audio quality in surround broadcasting and streaming.
