HE-AAC & MPEG-H – Expert Audio Technologies for TV Broadcasting

 

At CCBN Fraunhofer IIS showcases its major audio technologies for TV Broadcasting.

High-Efficiency Advanced Audio Coding (HE-AAC) is today´s globally established audio codec for TV and radio broadcasting. It has been deployed in more than 8 billion devices providing half of the world´s TV surround sound. Moreover, HE-AAC is the de-facto audio standard for streaming systems as it combines high audio quality with very low bit-rates allowing for an impressive audio experience even over channels with limited capacity.

With MPEG-H Fraunhofer IIS presents the future of television audio. The MPEG-H system is designed to work with today’s broadcast and streaming equipment. It includes object-based and immersive audio that allows viewers to adjust the sound mix to their preferences and improves the realism of sound. Furthermore it will tailor playback to sound best on a range of devices and environments, providing “universal delivery”.

Fraunhofer Cingo® & MPEG-H for the best immersive sound experience on VR devices

 

Fraunhofer Cingo brings audio immersion to VR devices and applications with a stunning level of realism that creates the experience of “being there”. With more than 25 years of experience in the field of audio coding and processing, today Fraunhofer IIS is a driver for truly immersive sound on VR devices, smartphones and tablets. Cingo renders 3D audio content over headphones incorporating head movements, and thus sound sources can be perceived from anywhere in the 3D space around the listener. A truly immersive soundscape is of utmost importance in any VR experience and becomes a determining factor in the success of the illusion. The MPEG-H audio standard is the ideal companion for Cingo 3D audio rendering as it can deliver immersive 3D sound for virtual environments to mobile devices at bitrates used today to deliver 2D surround sound. Besides audio channels, MPEG-H can also carry audio objects and higher-order-ambisonics signals. This makes it the ideal VR audio codec for both, user generated content and Cinematic VR content. Fraunhofer is providing a complete toolset of VR audio mastering and mixing plugins.

In addition to immersive sound, Cingo also enables an excellent surround sound listening experience over stereo speakers or headphones while providing existing stereo content with a more natural and clear sound. It includes features such as loudness optimization for listening in noisy environments and improves the intelligibility of dialog and commentary. Fraunhofer Cingo is used by industry leaders such as Google in its family of Nexus devices, as well as Samsung Gear VR.
