Next-Generation Audio is already a reality with MPEG-H – the audio system enabling broadcasters and content producers to create and distribute attractive programs with immersive audio and interactivity. The system is designed to work with today`s broadcast and streaming equipment. To demonstrate this, Fraunhofer IIS will set up an end-to-end DVB broadcast chain at IBC. xHE-AAC is natively supported in the Android Pie mobile operating system. The codec combines maximum coding efficiency, seamless bit rate switching and mandatory MPEG-D DRC Loudness and Dynamic Range Control, making it the ideal solution for audio and video streaming services as well as digital radio broadcasting. At IBC, xHE-AAC will be showcased in video streaming applications on Android Pie phones, Internet radio streaming on Apple TV and various broadcast radio scenarios.
Fraunhofer IIS offers technologies and applications for the entire chain of the global digital radio standards DRM and DAB+. At IBC, a digital radio transmission chain and a multi-standard Hybrid Radio SDR-based receiver solution will be shown. An essential part of a professional digital radio broadcast is the Fraunhofer ContentServerTM R6 technology. It combines internal audio encoding, support for external audio encoders, data service management and multiplex generation. A convenient user-friendly web interface enables configuration and system monitoring via remote access.
Moreover, Fraunhofer IIS offers a diverse set of technologies to decode and present digital radio services as part of its Software Defined Radio approach.
JPEG XS is the mezzanine image compression codec targeting for highest quality, low complexity and low latency. It addresses the demand of the broadcast production industry to transmit production feeds over multiple Ethernet based links. At IBC 2018 Fraunhofer IIS will show the life streaming of image data from a camera, captured, encoded and transported over an IP link and decoded on a second screen. An Adobe Premiere plug-in presents the JPEG XS real-time playback capability of 4K images and an SDK for JPEG XS encoding and decoding makes it possible to integrate the codec into custom-built applications and devices.
The post-production software easyDCP has secured its place on the market for creation, playback and quality control of digital cinema packages DCPs and Interoperable Master Packages IMPs for ten years. At IBC Fraunhofer IIS will celebrate the 10th anniversary of easyDCP and shows a new version with new features including new validation modules, HDR support for Dolby Vision content and faster workflows to transcode video material. Meanwhile more than 1,800 post-production houses and customers worldwide are using the easyDCP tools that are not only available as standalone version but also as pay-as-you-go service.
At IBC 2018 Fraunhofer IIS will show a new 3DOF+ light-field demo. For VR applications light-field can be one of the key solutions to generate live-action content that is rendered for perfect fit to VR glasses. The Realception® plug-in for NUKE enables light-field post-production and the editing and compositing of multi-camera data. A render plug-in for the Unreal gaming engine completes the workflow to explore new ways of VR content creation. The plug-ins are available for licensing to professional pilot users.
