iStix®- A cost-effective scanning solution for microscopy

To generate high resolution panoramas of microscope images, it is often necessary to employ expensive slide scanners. The Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS has developed iStix®: A scanning solution that combines image processing software and a camera to enable areal scans with your own microscope. iStix® will be presented for the first time at MEDICA in Düsseldorf from November 13 to 16, 2017.

  • Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS and Analog Devices, Inc., today unveiled software technology at CEDIA 2017 designed to significantly improve the immersive sound reproduction capabilities of consumer playback devices. The new offering is a reference implementation of Fraunhofer upHear® soundbar processing with MPEG-H decoding and rendering on an Analog Devices’ digital signal processor (DSP). It is the first commercial implementation of this software, which is fully integrated into the Analog Devices’ audio framework.

    RFID systems accelerate Industry 4.0 processes. The Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS has developed a Multibeam Antenna that can be integrated into existing systems and improve their reliability.   • Fraunhofer IIS/EAS is offering advanced modeling services for device degradation effects in North America. Using these proprietary techniques, designers are now able to verify the long-term behavior of integrated circuits (ICs) and systems especially in safety critical applications. Compared to today’s solutions, the advanced models can be used in all common industrial design environments. In addition to standard degradation effects, Fraunhofer also takes into account more complex dependencies and recovery effects.

    Erlangen/Munich, Germany: Smartphones are perfect all-rounders, but their poor voice quality is still a vexing issue. With the new EVS codec mobile conversations sound as natural as if the person you’re calling was standing right next to you. The Joseph von Fraunhofer Prize 2017 went to Markus Multrus, Dr. Guillaume Fuchs and Stefan Döhla for the development of the codec. They accepted the prize on behalf of the 50-strong team of researchers and engineers at Fraunhofer Institute of Integrated Circuits IIS in Erlangen who worked on this project.

  • Erlangen/Holzkirchen/Berlin, Germany: A consortium consisting of the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS, WORK Microwave and AVANTI Communications recently completed highly successful over-the-air trials on Avanti HYLAS satellite capacity employing the latest DVB-S2X modulator and demodulator equipment. The demonstrations used wideband carriers exploiting full transponder bandwidth and outperforming the target throughput of more than one gigabit per second (1 Gbps) using a single communication carrier. The technology demonstration was part of a development funded by the European Space Agency (ESA) under the "ARTES Advanced Technology" program.

    Fürth: Measurement services providers in particular have noticed that demand for computed tomography analysis has increased dramatically. Depending on the application, such measurements can take up to several hours. For this reason, the Fraunhofer Development Center X-ray Technology EZRT, together with xray lab, has developed the PolyCT conversion kit, which reduces measurement time by up to a factor of three. The CT system add-on makes its debut at the Hannover Messe from April 24–28, Hall 4, Booth E12.

  • Erlangen and Ilmenau, Germany/Las Vegas, Nevada – The Interoperable Master Format (IMF) is showing rapid growth in the media industry since its standardization by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) in 2016. The IMF is a uniform exchange format in post-production that enables the generation of different distribution formats derived from the master. For this process automated quality control of the AV-material after each transcoding step is essential to save time and money simultaneously. The IMF does not define quality control mechanisms; however, such functionalities are now integrated in the easyDCP post-production tools from Fraunhofer IIS to facilitate automated transcoding.
