iStix®- A cost-effective scanning solution for microscopy

To generate high resolution panoramas of microscope images, it is often necessary to employ expensive slide scanners. The Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS has developed iStix®: A scanning solution that combines image processing software and a camera to enable areal scans with your own microscope. iStix® will be presented for the first time at MEDICA in Düsseldorf from November 13 to 16, 2017.

    Nuremberg/Regensburg/Hanover: At the Hannover Messe, together with the BMW Group, the Fraunhofer Institute IIS is presenting a project for developing and testing an intelligent screwdriver for use in assembly. A special attachment module that is connected directly with the IT system receives the respective order and uses sensor data to check for and then signal order completion. This way, the production employee knows at all times if the order was completely and correctly carried out. The test application is currently in preparation in the production line at BMW in Regensburg, providing a basis for possible extensions of the intelligent tool.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS has developed the IoT-Bus, the first fieldbus to feature IPv6 support and an integrated security system. It combines Internet-protocol support with the advantages of a fieldbus, resulting in extensive range, high reliability and robustness and low latency.

  • ERLANGEN, Germany/BARCELONA, Spain – At Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, taking place from February 27 to March 2, 2017, Fraunhofer IIS will demonstrate Enhanced Voice Services (EVS), the 3GPP communication codec designed specifically for Voice over LTE (VoLTE) services. Today, EVS is supported by selected phone models, for example, from Samsung, LG or Sony and in use worldwide by leading carriers: NTT DoCoMo Japan, T-Mobile USA and Vodafone Germany have already enabled EVS-based calls in their LTE networks. In addition, multiple carriers in Asia have also integrated EVS into their networks.

    Erlangen/Munich: At ISPO MUNICH 2017 the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS officially launches HolodeckVR. HolodeckVR uses different tracking technologies allowing multiple users to slip away into adventure and move freely around up to 40,000 m2 of virtual worlds. Fraunhofer IIS teams up with partners like Messe München and fashion company Bogner to bring its HolodeckVR technology to market.

    ERLANGEN, Germany/LAS VEGAS, Nevada – Fraunhofer IIS, main inventor of the mp3 and AAC audio codecs, uses Texas Instruments (TI’s) 66AK2G02 DSP + ARM System on Chip (SoC) to transform the consumers’ audio experience. In early 2017, Fraunhofer IIS will introduce an MPEG-H enabled immersive soundbar and audio video receiver (AVR) reference design allowing convenient delivery of 3D sound into consumers’ homes, bringing audio quality to new levels.

  • Trademark for the MPEG-H TV Audio System

    ERLANGEN, Germany/LAS VEGAS, Nevada – In preparation for the start of the world’s first TV broadcast services with next-generation audio features – South Korea’s new MPEG-H-based ATSC 3.0 broadcast channels scheduled to go on the air in February – Fraunhofer IIS has developed a trademark program for products incorporating its MPEG-H TV Audio System.

    Erlangen (Germany). Some 400,000 people in Germany each year suffer from painful pressure sores on the skin, known as decubitus ulcers. These sores pri-marily affect bedridden patients who cannot be sufficiently mobilized, or whose position cannot be changed frequently enough. The Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS collaborated with five partners in the development of a mattress that prevents and treats decubitus. From November 14 to 17, Fraunhofer IIS will be presenting a prototype of the mattress at the MEDICA trade fair in Düsseldorf.

    Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS appoints new director to the board of directors: Dr. Bernhard Grill, former deputy director to Prof. Albert Heuberger, joins the board of directors at Fraunhofer IIS on November 1. While Heuberger, director of Fraunhofer IIS since 2011, assumes the position as executive director, Grill will oversee the activities of the Audio & Multimedia division.
