Moving Picture Technologies
Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits
Moving Picture Technologies
The Department Moving Picture Technologies develops new innovative imaging systems and procedures based on High Dynamic Range (HDR), Lightfield- and 3D capturing methods. Main application areas are the motion picture and TV industry, but also other areas will be covered. The algorithms will be used to extend technical and creative opportunities on the set and in the postproduction. To achieve practical use specific components like image processing ASICs, software tools or complete prototypes and devices will be developed.
Well known software developments will be used e.g. for creation, play back and control of Digital Cinema Packages. Actual and future extensions will work for 3D distribution packages, multi-format mastering or archiving of media content. The department is well connected to other organizations and associations and is working in several international standardization organizations.
Main working areas

easyDCP Software Suite
Mastering digital cinema packages requires a lot of expertise and know-how. The engineers of the Fraunhofer IIS developed a DCP mastering and playback software called easyDCP that makes the creation process of a 2D/3D DCP, the packaging and the quality control very easy to handle by a graphical user interface.
Curator Archive Suite
The CURATOR Archive Suite is a software suite especially designed for digital film archives. Based on the standardized JPEG 2000 profiles for digital archiving, Fraunhofer IIS provides tools for the generation and processing of Master Archive Package (MAP) and Intermediate Access Package (IAP). A lossless compressed MAP is intended to be the long-term storage format for digital media whereas a lossy compressed IAP can be used for a high quality access package within an archive.
JPEG2000 System on Chip
The JPEG2000 System on Chip allows the compression of HD and 2k video-streams in real-time. By compression in the JPEG 2000 format highest image quality is achieved, visually as well as fully mathematically lossless compression is supported.
FlashBox
Fieldrecorder for uncompressed recording and playback of HD and 3D sequences (YCbCr422 or RGB 444 or Dual Stream YCbCr): small size, light-weight of 1500 grams which can be easily put onto a camera rig or camera itself.
Computational Photography
Fraunhofer IIS is developing within the business field computational imaging new methods and algorithms for processing and recalculation of images with the help of computer technology. Main focus of the developments are new methods and systems for lightfield capturing and processing, new devices and algorithms for HDR image processing, the combination of data from different sensors (sensor fusion) and the developments of new systems for 3D and Multiview image capturing and processing for real life scenes. In addition new algorithms for Color and Image reconstruction as well as image quality improvements will be developed.
