mioty® – The Wireless IoT Technology

At a glance

Robust radio systems are used to transmit sensor data and control information in network structures. In times of Internet of Things (IoT), people and things are intelligently networked with each other, leading to innovations in the field of Industry 4.0 and Smart City.

In this context, the IoT protocol (mioty®) developed by Fraunhofer IIS sets new standards in the field of wireless data transmission in terms of scalability, cost efficiency, range, transmission security and battery life.

The solution approach is an asymmetric transmission method with many simple IoT nodes ("end points") as well as central base stations.

Robust data transmission of around 1.5 million messages can be ensured with just one base station. mioty® achieves ranges of many kilometers and is characterized by its energy efficiency with battery lifetimes of up to 20 years.

Technical description

mioty® uses an efficient channel encoding scheme that increases its range by a factor of 10 over standard 868 MHz wireless systems. Because it generates little self-interference, the system can support up to one million simultaneous transmitters. The transmitters are based on commercially-available chips from manufactures such as Texas Instruments and feature a compact design and extended battery operation (up to 20 years). The receivers, which are equipped with digital signal processors, have a flexible design that allows them to be adapted to specific customer applications. They can be used with either stationary or mobile applications and can be optimized for both environments. mioty® is furthermore resistant to interference within its own frequency band, consumes minimal energy and saves battery power.

mioty® Class B

The technological extension of mioty® by Class B now enables a variety of additional possibilities in the areas of Smart City, Industrial IoT (IIoT) or building management. Conventional measurement tasks, such as temperature measurement, can now be supplemented with control functions, such as heating or air conditioning.

IoT Localization for Smart City and IIoT

The combination of Fraunhofer's localization expertise and mioty® enables IoT localization solutions in the field of smart city and IIoT.

Application

mioty® can be deployed for a wide range of applications. The technology is suitable for monitoring large technical systems or difficult-to-access areas and can serve as the underlying transmission infrastructure for applications such as switching statuses, machine-to machine (M2M) communication, smart meters (remote meter readings and remote consumer control) and other systems. Even sports and security applications require data transmission involving numerous sensors. Wireless data transmission data sensors from Fraunhofer IIS can be used to send vital signs data from athletes or first responders. In addition, sensors for capturing ambient information such as humidity, motion, light, temperature or pressure can be integrated into the mioty® technology to support specific applications.

With its broad utility and special technical features, mioty® serves as the foundation for developing Industry 4.0 and IoT applications at Fraunhofer IIS.
