An outstanding year– Highlights 2023

🏆 Joseph von Fraunhofer Prize for MPEG-H Audio system

Whether for streaming music and films, watching TV, or in-car entertainment, the MPEG-H Audio system allows people to immerse themselves in soundscapes and adapt them to their own preferences. The development of this system was honored with the Joseph von Fraunhofer Prize 2023, which was awarded to Harald Fuchs, Dr. Achim Kuntz and Adrian Murtaza from the Audio and Media Technologies Division as representatives of a large team of people.

🏆 AES Best Technical Paper Award

Dr. Sascha Dick and Professor Jürgen Herre from the Audio and Media Technologies Division received the Audio Engineering Society’s Best Technical Paper Award at the 155th AES Convention for their paper "Investigation of the Impact of Spectral Cues from Torso Shadowing on Front-Back-Confusion and Perceived Differences along Cones of Confusion".
 

🏆 Best Paper Award at CHR conference

At the Computational Humanities Research (CHR) conference, Professors Meinard Müller and Christof Weiß from the Audio and Media Technologies Division received the Best Paper Award for their paper "Studying Tonal Evolution of Western Choral Music: A Corpus-Based Strategy" den Best Paper Award erhalten.

Winners of the AES Best Technical Paper Award

🏆 Best Paper Award at DCAI conference

Torsten Ohlenforst, Moritz Schreiber, Felix Kreyß, and Dr. Manuel Schrauth from the Communication Systems Division received the Best Paper Award at the International Conference on Distributed Computing and Artificial Intelligence (DCAI) 2023 for their paper "Enabling Distributed Inference of Large Neural Networks on Resource Constrained Edge Devices Using Ad Hoc Networks".
 

🏆 Best Workshop Paper Award at ICPM conference

At the International Conference on Process Mining (ICPM) 2023, Rene Dorsch, Michael Freund, and Professor Andreas Harth from our Center for Applied Research on Supply Chain Services received the Best Workshop Paper Award for their paper on "Breaking Down Barriers with Knowledge Graphs: Data Integration for Cross-Organizational Process Mining".
 

🏆 Best Paper Award at IPIN conference

Jonathan Ott, Maximilian Stahlke, Dr. Tobias Feigl, Sebastian Kram, and Dr. Christopher Mutschler from the Positioning and Networks Division received the Best Paper Award at the International Conference on Indoor Positioning and Indoor Navigation (IPIN) 2023 for their work on "Multipath Delay Estimation in Complex Environments using Transformers". Their results were also released as part of an IEEE publication in the journal Indoor and Seamless Positioning and Navigation (J-ISPIN).

 

🏆 Best Paper Award at the international IoS Symposium

The paper "Towards a Representation Model and Fog-Based Device Orchestration for Audio-Centric Pervasive Storytelling" by Professor Marcelo Moreno, DSc., and Professor Nils Peters from the Audio and Media Technologies Division received the Best Paper Award at the International Symposium on the Internet of Sounds (IoS) in Pisa.

🏆 Digital Processing Medal from SMPTE

The mp3 co-developer Professor Karlheinz Brandenburg was awarded the Digital Processing Medal from the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) for his fundamental work on audio coding.

 

🏆 FAU Innovator

Professor Meinard Müller, an expert in semantic audio processing, was named FAU-Innovator 2023 in the research category by Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU).

🏆 VDE Bayern Award

Dr. Andreas Brendel from the Audio and Media Technologies Division received the VDE Bayern Award 2023 for his dissertation on "Akustische Signalverarbeitung – Hörgeräte oder Telefonkonferenzen optimieren" (Acoustic signal processing – optimizing hearing aids or telephone conferences).
