CTportable 2.0 – Mobile computed tomography

© Fraunhofer IIS

Conventional computed tomography systems are often large and stationary, which limits measurements to the system’s location and requires complex sample environments. The CTportable family developed at the Development Center for X-ray Technology of the Fraunhofer Institute IIS offers compact and mobile solutions. These systems are lightweight and flexible, ideal for measurements at changing or previously inaccessible sites.

The newest member of the family is CTportable 2.0, designed specifically for precise seed and seedling analysis as well as plant characterization. CTportable 2.0 combines the advantages of a 3D CT system that remains mobile with the extendable integration of a handling system for fully automated sample exchange at any time.

Semi-transparent 3D rendering of a germination vessel with 50 seedlings.

Seed analysis

  • Separation from bulk
  • Segmentation of individual components (e.g., embryo, cavity, hard and soft pericarp)

Seedling analysis

  • Assessment of germination capacity
  • Volume and length of primary root, side roots, hypocotyl, cotyledon(s)

Subsurface root analysis

  • Analysis of root architecture: growth, root length, number of root tips, root volume
  • Examination of tuber crops (beets, potatoes): height, diameter, length, and volume

Setup and function

In addition to a high-performance X-ray source and a fast detector, the handy CT device includes a motion system with magnification axis, vertical axis, and precise rotation. The control software optionally integrates a helical scan function, enabling vertical travel during the object’s 360° rotation. Depending on object size (see technical data), acquisitions are performed either in a single scan or stepwise by shifting the axes during measurement. The measurement data are then reconstructed and made available for viewing.
