eResourcing – Using data to create more sustainability

May 19, 2022 | How data recycling and clever use of the data life cycle lead to greater sustainability in business and industry.

Our everyday work and personal lives are becoming increasingly digital. As a result, more and more data is being generated – sometimes deliberately, sometimes as a by-product. This data is a valuable raw material, especially for business and industry, and one we can derive much more benefit from if we manage it in a clever, holistic manner. But more data also means more electricity, more storage space and more carbon emissions.

Prof. Dr. Alexander Martin, Fraunhofer IIS director, responsible for the Positioning and Networks as well as the Supply Chain Services research areas

How we can use data in a genuinely sustainable manner – this is what Prof. Alexander Martin, mathematician, data and AI expert, and director of Fraunhofer IIS, is exploring together with his team in the “eResourcing” research field. In addition to sustainable data management – including data recycling – the analytical use of data plays a vital role in putting whole processes in individual sectors upon a much more sustainable footing with greater conservation of resources.

In the following four short videos, Alexander Martin presents the institute’s research work in the field of eResourcing. He explains the importance of taking a holistic view of the data life cycle, and discusses specific implementations in individual sectors and real-life success stories.

eResourcing Part 1 – Data, digitalization and sustainability

  • Will increasing digitalization be a problem or a blessing for sustainability?
  • What role does clever data management play?
  •  What exactly does eResourcing mean?

eResourcing Part 2 – The data life cycle and the recycling of data

  • How can we manage data in a truly sustainable fashion?
  • What opportunities and added value present themselves in each individual phase of the data life cycle?
  • What exactly does research into data recycling consist of?

eResourcing Part 3 – Sectors that already recycle data

  • What sectors employ data recycling?
  • How can eResourcing be used to, for example, conserve resources in local public transport?
  • How is the agricultural industry already using eResourcing, and to what purpose?

eResourcing Part 4 – Sustainable on two levels

  • On what levels does sustainability benefit from data management and data recycling?
  • Can clever data management make entire sectors more sustainable?
  • Will data management itself be sustainable in the future?
