Research Cinema

For more than 25 years, Fraunhofer IIS has helped shape the world of digital film production and moving-image distribution. Continuous research, development, and standardization activities in image coding help ensure the highest quality standards throughout the entire workflow, from feature film production to cinema exhibition. For example, Fraunhofer IIS experts contributed to the development of ARRI’s first digital cinema camera, the ARRIFLEX D-21. Image quality and the practical applicability of new technologies are central to the institute’s research activities. Thanks to the technical excellence of the Research Cinema and its staff, Fraunhofer IIS was commissioned with the development of quality standards for the Digital Cinema Initiative (DCI).

Commercial digital cinema demands the highest possible image quality. This was one of the reasons why Fraunhofer IIS led the standardization of the JPEG 2000 image codec for digital cinema within ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29/WG 1 (JPEG).

The current state-of-the-art audio and video infrastructure enables the professional evaluation of image and audio content. The projection system and loudspeaker setup are regularly calibrated and fine-tuned to ensure the highest level of performance.

Current Activities at the Research Cinema

  • The Fraunhofer IIS Research Cinema in Erlangen is where tomorrow’s moving-image technologies are developed. The latest innovation is the JPEG-XS video codec, which received an EMMY® Award in 2025.
  • Beyond moving-image research, the Research Cinema serves as a scientific platform for 3D audio reproduction. The development of next-generation audio technologies such as MPEG-H and MPEG-I depends on comprehensive testing and reference-quality audio reproduction in a variety of environments, including cinemas.
  • In addition to supporting media research, the cinema is also used to capture and analyze audience responses using infrared cameras and medical monitoring technologies.
