High-energy computed tomography at a new level
With GiantEye, a globally unique facility for non-destructive testing of large structures is currently being created at the X-ray Technology Development Center of Fraunhofer IIS. New standards for non-destructive analysis of large objects
Drive batteries after a crash test. Engine components in lifecycle testing. Museum treasures that must not even be touched. Large sea freight containers that cannot be opened easily. Wherever conventional computed tomography reaches its limits, we will soon have a solution with GiantEye!
The high-energy CT system will be put into operation at the Fraunhofer location in Fürth together with OHB Digital Connect starting in early 2027. This globally unique system enables the complete, three-dimensional scanning of objects up to the size of 20-foot shipping containers — without the need for time-consuming setup.
CT technology not only addresses the traditional fields of application in non-destructive material testing and metrology, but also provides completely unobstructed access to hidden structures and geometries, such as for creating digital twins of crashed or tested vehicles, large aerospace components, and large assemblies.
Specifically, this means:
- Larger objects: Examination of (crashed) vehicles, large components from the aerospace industry, and large assemblies.
- More meaningful results: No distortion from repositioning – liquids remain where they are, components stay in their real position.
- New areas of Application: With the advent of electric mobility, additive manufacturing technologies, and increasingly complex multi-material assemblies, new testing challenges are emerging for which no conventional testing technology currently exists.
- Engine for innovation: Through the fast and non-destructive method, condition information of a product can be fed back into the development processes with minimal effort, helping to keep pace with increasingly shorter innovation cycles.
