Quantum computing offers potential for complex optimization problems in industrial applications

Computing with qubits on the basis of quantum mechanical principles is “revolutionizing” computer technology, comparable to the breakthrough of computer technology itself and the transition from analog to digital technologies. This new type of computing harbors enormous potential. Yet how and when will quantum computing supersede conventional computer technology? More to the point, is computing with qubits suitable and indeed practical for all applications?

Quantum computing offers a new approach to carrying out complex calculations and predications rapidly and in all possible variations. To achieve this, however, the first challenge is to actually build and operate a functioning quantum computer. 

Now that the BayQS – the Bavarian quantum hub and quantum computer operated by IBM and Fraunhofer – has been commissioned, this goal is tantalizingly close. 

Three quantum experts from the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS, Markus Weissenbäck, Dr. Axel Plinge and Dr. Richard Schielein, describe the possibilities opened up by deploying qubits and quantum technology in various mathematical optimization tasks, machine learning, AI applications and typical industrial applications.
