RoboCT – Automated X-ray inspection for large cast components and process optimization

We will present how we can flexibly inspect large cast components using 2D X-ray and computed tomography (CT). In doing so, we use methods of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to offer our customers an easy-to-parameterize solution for Automated Defect Recognition (ADR).

At the Fraunhofer joint booth, we will demonstrate how the RoboCT system can flexibly inspect large-format and geometrically complex castings with X-ray and computed tomography—even at hard-to-access locations. Two or more robots move the X-ray tube and detector around the object, enabling comprehensive coverage and a high degree of flexibility. The AI-supported algorithms of the ISAR system perform fully automatic defect recognition (ADR) of X-ray image data in 2D and 3D. This approach eliminates time-consuming parameterization by X-ray experts.

Our focus is not only on inspection but also on process optimization. With the Cast Control software, data from the casting process are merged with the results of the X-ray inspection. This makes it possible to identify the causes of scrap in a targeted manner and remedy them at an early stage.

In the FutureCarProduction project, our technologies contribute to the development of a body concept for sustainable vehicle manufacturing, which is presented by our partner institutes.
