When it comes to transporting hydrogen, natural gas pipelines offer some clear advantages: the infrastructure is already in place, they aren’t as unsightly as overhead power lines, and they can be retrofitted to carry hydrogen. We discussed the pros and cons with Dr. Thomas Hüwener – member of the management board of Open Grid Europe GmbH (OGE), a natural gas transmission system operator – and Fraunhofer IIS director Prof. Alexander Martin. They told us how this infrastructure could be repurposed for a future hydrogen economy, what benefits it offers – and where researchers now need to focus their efforts.
