Fraunhofer IIS Director
Giovanni Del Galdo has been Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS in Erlangen since November 1, 2025. In this role, he assumes joint responsibility for the institute’s core research areas microelectronics, sensor technology and data acquisition, as well as signal processing and transmission.
After completing his studies in Telecommunications Engineering at Politecnico di Milano, he earned his doctorate in the Communications Research Laboratory at Technische Universität Ilmenau in 2007. Since 2007, he has contributed his expertise to the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS, where he initially worked in the Audio and Media Technologies division in Erlangen.
In 2012, he was appointed Professor at Technische Universität Ilmenau and assumed leadership of the Wireless Distribution Systems/Digital Broadcasting (DVT) research group, a joint initiative of the university chair and Fraunhofer IIS. In 2018, the group was permanently integrated into the institute’s structure as the Electronic Measurements and Signal Processing (EMS) department. Giovanni Del Galdo headed this department concurrently, thereby bridging the gap between fundamental academic research and practical application.
With his appointment as University Professor of Information Technology and Electronics at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg on November 1, 2025, he was also appointed Director of Fraunhofer IIS.
