Creating a realistic and immersive sound experience for home theaters via web streaming – was the subject Dr. Sascha Dick explored in his dissertation, and his findings earned him the second-place Hugo Geiger Prize. This annual award is given jointly by the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development, and Energy (StMWi) and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft to honor outstanding application-oriented doctoral theses.
In recognition of his remarkable career, Stefan Geyersberger received the inaugural Golden Bridge Award from Via LA, one of the world’s largest patent pool administrators at their annual Golden Bridge Summit. According to industry analysts at IAM, Geyersberger’s patent expertise positions him as one of the top 300 intellectual property strategists worldwide.
Dr. Heiko Gaßner, group leader Digital Health Pathways at Fraunhofer IIS, and his team from the university hospital in Erlangen received the 2024 Erlangen Prize for Medicine, Technology, and Health in the “Medical Care” category for their DigiTrainPD project. In the project, the researchers developed a digital solution for movement training for patients with Parkinson’s disease. This enables optimum therapy in everyday life and serves as the ideal complement to rehabilitation training in the clinic.
The Fraunhofer IIS Prize, awarded by the Leistungszentrum Elektroniksysteme (LZE) to honor achievements with outstanding practical application, went to Markus Eberhorn in 2024. His work on robot-assisted X-ray inspection for the automotive industry led to a surge in industrial customer acquisitions and increased the visibility of Fraunhofer IIS in the field of electromobility.
Dr. Fabian Küch received the Fraunhofer IIS Prize awarded by the Leistungszentrum Elektroniksysteme (LZE) for his scientific achievements in the field of natural language processing. Together with his team, he made key contributions to improving the quality of language models and developed efficient solutions for training them on distributed high-performance computing clusters.
Dr. Lydia Bühler was awarded the Fraunhofer IIS Prize for outstanding scientific achievements by the Stiftungsfonds Weick – Förderer der Wissenschaft, Freunde von Fraunhofer (Weick Foundation Fund – Supporter of Science, Friends of Fraunhofer). Her doctoral thesis addresses the smart circular economy – a topic of high social, political, and economic relevance. In her thesis, Dr. Bühler describes how digital solutions can be used to protect natural resources and build sustainable and resilient value creation systems.
Institute Director Prof. Alexander Martin served as interim president at the University of Technology Nuremberg (UTN) from March to October 2024, until Prof. Michael Huth took office as the new Founding President.
Since January 2024, Prof. Tassilo Schuster, Chief Scientist at the Supply Chain Services division, has been serving as research professor for sustainable business models and global value networks in the Business and Economics department at the Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences (HNU).
Prof. Kay-Uwe Giering, head of the Application Center for Quantum Communication at the Engineering of Adaptive Systems division, was appointed Professor of Microsystem Technology/ Mixed-Signal Design at the HTW Dresden University of Applied Sciences as of the summer semester 2024.
Prof. Dominik Seuß, head of the Machine Intelligence department in the Positioning and Networks research area, was appointed Professor of Computer Vision at the Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt, effective October 1, 2024.
