Freqently Asked Questions

"I’m interested in licensing the Fraunhofer Professional DAB+ Audio Encoder software. Give me the details!"

We are answering a few typical questions that prospect licensees of the Fraunhofer Professional DAB+ Audio Encoder software may have.

  • The Fraunhofer Professional DAB+ Audio Encoder software is licensed to equipment manufacturers or service providers for integration into professional DAB+ encoder/multiplexer solutions. Please contact your supplier of DAB+ head-end solutions and ask for the “Fraunhofer Professional DAB+ Audio Encoder” to be provided.

  • Yes, of course! No DAB+ broadcaster should cut corners in the wrong place and ensure best-possible audio quality for their services - whether you serve a country or a neighborhood. Please contact your supplier of DAB+ head-end solutions and ask for the “Fraunhofer Professional DAB+ Audio Encoder” to be provided.
However, please note that the Fraunhofer Professional DAB+ Audio Encoder is only available for professional DAB+ equipment/solutions and not for use with open-source based DAB broadcast solutions such as ODR. Those users may resort to open-source based audio encoders.

  • The license fee for Fraunhofer Professional DAB+ Audio Encoder is based on a one-time fee per instance. An instance of the audio encoder software creates one DAB+ audio subchannel. If a DAB+ head-end or professional audio encoder solution is able to encode ten DAB+ audio subchannels, it includes at least ten licensed audio encoder instances.
Note that the number of instances required for a system is defined by the maximum amount of simultaneously encoded audio subchannels at any time – even temporarily. For example, a DAB+ head-end encoding ten audio subchannels continuously throughout the day and having five additional audio subchannels for localized news for a few minutes at any time during the day requires a total of 15 audio encoder instances.

  • Professional DAB+ head-end or encoder solutions are typically run in a redundancy mode with multiple systems to provide fail-over recovery. The instances of the audio encoders in the backup or redundancy system are counted independently as regular instances for each of those systems, regardless of whether they are part of a main system or a backup system, and whether the respective system is operational continuously or temporarily.

  • Yes, volume discounts for packages of large numbers of pre-paid Fraunhofer Professional DAB+ Audio Encoder instances can be discussed. Please note that such bulk licenses need to be ‘consumed’ within an agreed period of time from their purchase.
