Next Generation Audio for Broadcast and Streaming

MPEG-H Audio is a Next Generation Audio system that revolutionizes sound. Its one-of-a-kind personalization options meet individual preferences and accessibility requirements. Choosing a film’s language is as easy as picking a favorite sports commentator or enhancing the dialogue of a show. All customization options are under the full control of the content provider and defined during live or post-production.

MPEG-H Audio also delivers immersive sound that transports audiences into the center of the action and lets them discover a world of enveloping sound. These lifelike experiences can easily be delivered to a broad range of devices. One mix adapts to compatible platforms – from home theaters to soundbars and even headphones.

Technical Features

Many ways that MPEG-H can make a difference

Personalized Sound Experiences

With its unique personalization features, the MPEG-H Audio system enables users to adjust dialogue levels and audio description settings, allowing the entertainment experience to become interactive and tailored to individual preferences and needs.

The sound system delivers these unique interactivity features through MPEG-H object-based coding, in which each sound element is defined as an individual element or object. As opposed to classic, channel-based approaches, such systems assign metadata to each object to define its properties. This technology enables viewers to adjust the sound mix to their preferences, for instance to boost hard-to-understand dialogue or to choose a “home team“-mix of a sports broadcast. It can also be used to efficiently add descriptions for visually impaired audience members to a broadcast and to add additional languages to a film’s dialogue. All without interrupting the viewing experience – using only 20-40 kbit/s for each language.

MPEG-H Audio is the most mature system on the market with its combination of channel-based and object-based audio. On this foundation, creators and providers can enable their audiences to customize content within predefined limits with only a few tweaks of customary production workflows. Producers extend personalization options to the audience, while maintaining complete creative control. Viewers benefit from a highly interactive experience, with fine tuning to their own preferences.

Immersive Sound

MPEG-H Audio delivers a new level of sound going beyond stereo and surround thanks to sound coming from above and even from below. Adding height helps listeners experience sound in a much more realistic and natural way. The audio system can transmit immersive sound with additional front and rear height speaker channels improving today’s surround sound broadcasts and streams to provide a truly realistic and immersive feeling on par with the latest cinema sound systems.

The immersive experience can also be played back with devices such as 3D soundbars and headphones with binauralization technology. A single immersive mix is created and delivered to the receiving device, where it is optimized for the individual listening situation, be it stereo, surround, or immersive. This enables most consumers to enjoy high-quality immersive audio without having to add new speakers to their existing setup.

Universal Delivery

Regardless of the device, the MPEG-H Audio system delivers the best sound experience possible – in the home theatre as well as on smartphones, tablets, and Virtual Reality devices. The built-in decoder of the receiving device renders the content to the capabilities of the connected playback devices. There is no need for complicated selection or setup processes to find the content version which best works for the device. Only one MPEG-H stream is delivered by a streaming or broadcast platform to all kinds of receiver and playback devices, from headphones to sound bars and discrete loudspeaker systems. The receiving device automatically renders the audio to match the capabilities of the playback setup.

TV & Broadcasting

The MPEG-H Audio system is based on the MPEG-H 3D Audio standard from ISO/IEC MPEG, the international standards group responsible for many global media standards such as MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3 (mp3), MPEG-2/-4 AAC, MPEG-4 HE-AAC, AVC/H.264, and HEVC/H.265. This makes MPEG-H Audio an accessible and future-proof technology.

MPEG-H Audio is included in the ATSC, DVB, TTA (Korean) and SBTVD (Brazilian) TV standards: In South Korea it is on air 24/7, since the country launched their UHD service based on ATSC 3.0 in 2017. In Brazil, MPEG-H Audio is on air as part of the commercial launch of DTV+, the country's next-generation television platform. As the sole mandatory audio system for DTV+, MPEG-H Audio enables immersive, interactive, and personalized audio experiences for millions of viewers. The rollout began in June 2026 and is being showcased through major live sports broadcasts, including the Soccer World Championship, marking a significant milestone for next-generation broadcasting in Latin America. MPEG-H Audio was also selected as audio codec for the upcoming advanced ISDB broadcast system in Japan.

Accessibility

Broadcast and streaming are key for information and entertainment. A high degree of accessibility ensures that even more people have access to news, sports, and their favorite shows. MPEG-H Audio helps creators and providers supply their audiences with content with accessibility settings while keeping the production and distribution effort to a minimum. Thanks to MPEG-H Audio, providers deliver their content with enhanced dialogues, add sophisticated audio description options, offer alternative language versions including simplified language, and ensure consistent loudness. All of this is compiled into a single bitstream.

MPEG-H Audio is transforming music production with immersive, object-based sound. It lets creators place and move audio elements in a three-dimensional space, delivering rich, spatial experiences across headphones and speakers. Creators can also enable listeners to adjust elements of a track to suit their preferences while maintaining artistic intent. Already supported by popular DAWs and used by the 360 Reality Audio format, initiated by Sony.  Producers can easily integrate high-quality, flexible audio into their projects. Some examples of immersive music experience can be found on the mH-ii app.
