The ARM9-based platform functions as a gateway and coordinates all important communication interfaces in different charging scenarios, such as »Allocation to charge spot«, »Vehicle identification«, and »Coordination of charging process with smart grid requirements«.
 

Security in the Field of Global Energy Management

Data security is becoming increasingly important in many fields, and global energy management is no exception. The security measures protecting interfaces to homes, electric vehicles, and electricity producers must be adapted to the latest requirements.
 

Smart Metering Gateways

Smart metering supports the up-to-date billing of energy consumption based on real usage by querying meter readings via the communication interface in the metering gateway. This makes it possible for monthly electricity bills to reflect actual consumption very closely while factoring in variable tariffs. It also allows current power consumption figures to be visualized in user-friendly forms.
 

Low Power Telemetry

More and more energy management applications are being found for radio systems for wireless data transmission. These mostly narrow-band telemetry systems are used to transfer sensor data and control information. Fraunhofer IIS’s wireless miniaturized low-power telemetry solutions are suitable for connecting as many as 10,000 sensors within a range of several kilometers. The compact transmitters are especially cost-effective and energy efficient.
 

IoT-Bus

As part of the SEED project we develop the technology IoT-Bus. This is a communication bus based on EIA / RS-485 of the IEEE 802.15.4 standard, which enables a secure and reliable transmission of measured values and commands and control and connectivity IoT. In many applications of the Internet of Things (IoT) a wired communication is a wireless preferable when it comes to reliability, robustness and security of communications.

In the field of energy management and automation technology, a diverse range of components must be capable of interoperable communication with each other and of carrying out control and measurement functions on heterogeneous communication networks.
 

Power Monitoring

Condition monitoring involves monitoring the status of a system. Fraunhofer IIS’s performance monitoring system supports compliance with ISO 50001 energy management guidelines. It also permits analyses of power grid quality and of the power consumption of industrial machinery and systems.

 

Data Security for Energy Management Systems

In view of current security flaws and the advent of the Internet of Things, secure communication is needed more than ever for the transmission of sensitive data. The security mechanisms protecting interfaces to building management systems, manufacturing plants, electric vehicles, and power grid operators must be adapted to the latest requirements.
 

Current Measurement

Using a new kind of measuring system for energy monitoring, it is possible to measure and record the magnetic field of the current-carrying conductor. The contact-free current measurement is performed by highly integrated Hall sensors.
 

Wireless Metering with Wireless Sensor Networks

Fraunhofer IIS has developed energy-efficient s-net® metering technology for the wireless recording of energy consumption data. When it comes to wireless networking over a wide area for the purpose of data acquisition, the technology’s self-organizing sensor network and multi-hop communication are especially valuable.
 

PLC - Wake-Up Transceiver

Intelligent energy management requires the exchange of information. Power Line Communication (PLC) uses existing power lines to carry data, saving additional installation costs. PLC-based wake-up transceivers help to reduce today’s high levels of idle consumption and therefore the energy demand of PLC communication nodes.

Energy Harvesting

Energy self-sufficient, maintenance-free wireless systems with unlimited operating time – that is the goal of our energy harvesting technologies. Radio sensors, displays, and other small-scale consumers tap energy sources in their surroundings – such as light, heat, and motion. Research topics include the use of tiny quantities of electrical energy and the optimum adjustment of converter and storage unit to maximize energy yields.
 

Battery Management

High-voltage battery systems consisting of a large number of individual battery cells can reach system voltages of between 50 and 400 volts. The individual cells have to be separately monitored and balanced so as to be able to use the maximum available capacity of every single cell and to ensure safe operation. Research topics include flexible architectures for monitoring unlimited battery combinations and algorithms for efficient cell balancing and the precise calculation of remaining capacity.
