6G LINO: The 6G Laboratory In Orbit

Thanks to their low orbital altitude, LEO constellations not only enable low-latency communications but also provide global and resilient network coverage. As a result, they will play a key role in the evolution of Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTNs) toward 6G. However, the advantages of small satellites also come with significant technical challenges, including rapid satellite movement, frequent handovers, pronounced Doppler effects, dynamic visibility conditions, and complex spectrum sharing with terrestrial networks.

With 6G LINO, our 6G Laboratory In Orbit, we are already providing a reconfigurable experimentation platform in low Earth orbit today. This allows technologies for non-terrestrial networks to be tested under real space conditions at an early stage. That way, it becomes possible to quickly determine whether new applications can withstand the ultimate stress test in orbit. What still seems futuristic today could soon become reality.

A broad range of testing capabilities

Validate software and firmware in orbit

Test suitable software, firmware, and operating systems under real space conditions. Evaluate their functionality and radiation tolerance.

Explore robust signal transmission

Explore waveforms, coding schemes, and synchronization strategies for challenging radio conditions, such as low signal-to-noise ratios and significant Doppler shifts.

Test IoT applications over NTN

Explore Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) techniques over Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTNs), including approaches for coverage extension and energy-efficient network access.

Implemented technologies for your experiments

For your individual experiments, you can also leverage use case options that have already been implemented on the test platform.

Availability and use

6G LINO is a project funded by the European Space Agency (ESA). Following its planned launch in 2027, 6G LINO will be available as an open experimentation platform for external partners from industry and academia.

6G LINO provides a complete space-based end-to-end testing infrastructure for evaluating the interaction between satellites and terrestrial mobile networks. What makes the platform unique is its reconfigurable AI and signal processing capabilities, allowing customer-specific software and firmware to be uploaded directly to and activated in space.
