5G localization (fingerprinting) in combination with 4G and Wi-Fi

What’s special about this technology?

5G fingerprinting is unusual in that it allows indoor localization as a pure software solution that can be installed on, say, commercially available smartphones. It reliably detects different rooms and floors by way of the structural elements that attenuate the field strengths of mobile radio signals, such as walls and ceilings. Thanks to a calibration measurement, this technology turns the complexity of building structures into an advantage. The more elaborate the structure, the more accurate a solution can become.

What kind of customers are interested in Fraunhofer IIS’s 5G fingerprinting offering?

The solution is relevant for customers who are intrigued by the idea of localization inside buildings with medium accuracy of 5–10 meters. In particular, that includes developers of apps in which positioning plays a part. The possible applications for it are many and varied. For example, it could be used in systems for guiding people around museums, exhibitions and public buildings, but also in industrial applications such as personal emergency signal systems. It is also aimed at system integrators and professional applications for documenting construction progress or for asset management in hospitals.

What still needs to be done to develop 5G fingerprinting to market maturity?

Compatibility must be increased to make it easier to integrate existing components into commercial systems. We are also expanding the solution’s ability to learn independently so as to improve tracking once the system is up and running. Work is underway to build ecosystems for integration with industrial customers. In addition, we must continuously strive to advance standards for interfaces and intensify infrastructure development.
