5G: saving lives

In order to further improve the rescue chain, the possibilities of 5G mobile communications technology are being tested. In the project, together with partners, we develop and test localization and networking technologies for three fields of application: emergency calls, first aid and emergency services. The technologies are intended to support the emergency services on site quickly, safely and effectively and to inform those affected. For example, our experts use hybrid methods such as satellite-based localization together with 5G to precisely navigate automated supply drones with first-aid material to the scene.

For the safety of the emergency services, physiological parameters are recorded with sensors close to the body, a so-called wireless body area network. Sensors integrated into the clothing or end devices carried along use 5G signals or Ultra Wide Band UWB to permanently monitor the distances between the emergency services and to determine the changes in movement using inertial sensors. Combined with telemetric data about the position of the emergency services inside and outside, they can be guided very quickly through specific instructions out of a health or life-threatening situation. With the fusion of all data, a quick and precise situation overview is created.
