5G Bavaria automotive test bed in Rosenheim

September 12, 2022 | Interview with Martin Speitel

The 5G Bavaria automotive test bed provides the infrastructure for testing the latest 5G functionalities in real traffic environments. With the properties it offers, the 5G mobile communications standard is the ideal basis for connecting vehicles and traffic infrastructure, where flexible and fast, real-time-capable data transmission is key. Thus, 5G paves the way for optimized traffic concepts that enable vehicles to communicate independently with their environment, recognize dangerous situations and be intelligently integrated into the traffic flow.

What is it that makes our 5G Bavaria automotive test bed in Rosenheim so special?

The automotive test bed uses commercial infrastructure components – used in the same way as by mobile network operators (MNOs) – as well as a closed network that is used exclusively for tests that require realistic conditions.

What precisely does the automotive test bed offer?

The automotive test bed can be used for research and tests that require a 4G or 5G mobile communications connection. It offers stretches of urban, country and highway roads, as well as comprehensive measurement options on request. Our experts are on hand to provide support in test planning and execution.

What kind of customers are interested in using the test bed?

Most of the test bed’s customers are from the automotive industry, but providers of data and entertainment services can also use it to examine or optimize quality of service within a mobile communications environment.

What tests have already been carried out at the test bed in Rosenheim?

So far we’ve completed tests of network parametrization, performance and functionality. Since operations at the automotive test bed began only recently, it is nowhere near exhausting its potential.

The automotive test bed permits testing of various mobility applications in realistic conditions using the latest 5G mobile technology.
